Talking out of his iArse

In 2008, Apple deity Steve Jobs damned the Amazon Kindle to the technological abyss by asserting on eBook readers, “It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore. Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year.” Fast-foward to 2010 and chuckle with glee from your comfy desk chair as you watch his holiness make a u-turn with all the elegance of an agitated baboon as the iPad comes out, brimming with eBook reader features and plans to release books on the app store. But maybe Jobs wasn’t talking out of his iArse back then, as Google takes up hammers to nail down the coffin of the printed word, people are still reading – but Google want their own say on how they do so.

Google have been, for lack of a better word, prolific in their endeavours – rising from an obscure, oddly named search engine to a main player in almost every digital pie they can stick their grubby little fingers into. Having perfected and, with increasing speed, enacted the art of data collection, and having catalogued nearly every scrap of data, they’re moving on to the most old school of old school information distribution and are attempting to digitise books…

For around six years now, Google have been feaverishly cataloging books faster than a hyperactive librarian, meticulously scanning page after page and applying character recognition to create a vast database of books and their content, with a view to have search terms passed through the data and return books that contain information on your search term. The amount of content that you’ll get to see from results is, as of yet, undetermined, as Google are, as you’d expect, being put through the motions of copyright issues. The overarching concept is that, rather than searching to find websites with the information you need, or having to face the daring feat of going to your local library for books on the subject, you can get information the credibility of a book without the hassle and trauma of standing upright.

We’re missing the bigger picture here – Google have tirelessly worked to build what is essentially a global centre for websites, videos, shopping and anything that the internet can do. But there’s always been a divide (a ‘digital divide’ if you will) between information readily available digitally and what’s hard to obtain, but often more useful, in hard copy – once again, also, it’s a trade off between convenience and precision.

It’s not unlike Wikipedia, show me a single regular internet user who hasn’t used the editable encyclopedia in some capacity, it is used because it is a prolific and centralised hub of information. The problem with Wikipedia, as with any website, is that there is a big difference in how this information is moderated – although, despite the bad press it gets, Wikipedia is arguably a more reliable source than other sites as a whole, because it is moderated to a degree whereas the web is not – which means there is no guarantee that the information you see is correct. Getting a book published is another aquatic vertebrate teapot, however, as a manuscript, reseach and information is subject to detailed editing, proof reading and review before a publisher sinks it’s cash into bringing it to paper and print. Non-fiction, therefore, and in particular publications of a scientific or otherwise factual matter is heavily moderated and it’s content is, again arguably, of greater veracity. Google is using their technology to make an online encyclopedia of entirely moderated information, with a plethora of fiction to boot.

I’m usually the first, or at least the second, to bemoan how a new project or gadget won’t be a success for this reason or that reason – but for once the sneeringly cynical side of my brain is taking a holiday, because I think this is fantastic. Many have accepted the sad but ultimately inevitable fact that libraries and books aren’t the primary method of getting information anymore, as with everything the convenience of our ability to retreive massive volumes of information with little more than a few finger movements has lead to it’s downturn. However, if we can get the same availability from sources as reputable and scrutinised as books, plus Google’s ubiquity as an information source, the oft-quoted dystopian vision of a world built on unmoderated and inaccurate information can be shut down by the luddite morons that preach it.

If Jobs is to be believed, the printed word might be dead, but it lives on in another form, albeit an abstract and entirely non-physical form, almost like a spirit…it’s oddly poetic. Gah, that was sickeningly sentimental.

Oh yeah, and if anyone smugly declares anything about the printed word technically living on as eInk screens on eBook Readers they will receive a swift and precise beating with my Sherlock Holmes collection – which is a heavy motherfucker.

Windows Live Writer – A Practical Review

Good Afternoon, again (You’ll understand why again later). I recently read a rave review about a new application on the Windows Live suite, Windows Live Writer, which had installed itself sneakily on my machine when I last updated Live Messenger. It’s not very often that you go to download a new piece of software and find it’s already on your computer, now that’s service!

Windows Live Writer is a blog integration tool that links itself to your blog, supporting all the major blogging platforms, including Wordpress (a-thank-you), allowing you to write blog posts with all the creature comforts of Microsoft Word, just as if you were writing a document before posting it online. Features from this include a spell-checker (good for me), standard text formatting tools and previews of how a post will look online before it’s published.

I thought the best way to test out the quality of the program is to write an actual blog post, indeed one reviewing the software itself, to my blog and see how it goes. If you look closely at this screenshot, you’ll notice that it’s content is different to this post, that’s because when I was tinkering with the settings (trying to get it to post to two blogs at once) it crashed on me. Lacking an autosave or recovery system, that meant that the post was lost forever. The software does come with options to save drafts as you go both locally and directly to the drafts area on your web server, but neither will save unless you elect to, so keep saving just as you would with any old document, even though Office comes with an autosave function.

As well as the normal old top menu buttons that Microsoft have been gradually phasing out with more recent versions of Office, the word processor facade is re-enforced by the text formatting tools giving everything you’d expect and/or need for a normal blog. It also comes with a few mission-specific buttons for starting/opening/saving new posts. The side menu, which oddly is on the right instead of left, as is normal for most WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors, is half a view of recent posts, drafts and links to the blog, and half an insert menu, pre-loaded with all the normal things you would put on a blog post. Clicking “Add a plug-in” takes you to the Microsoft website, specifically a page about available plug-ins and extra functions that are free and, I’d expect, easy to install.

The bottom menu is more interesting, as it has all the admin stuff that I should (but don’t due to laziness) be putting on each post, including categories, tags and publish dates, which are easy to input and are attached to your post just as with a normal post. It also has tabs to see the post you’re working on in various views, edit, preview and source (which churns up your bog-standard HTML coding).

As a piece of kit I’m whelmed (not over or under). It’s a useful little tool, particularly if I can get it to post to both incarnations of my blog and save me having to do constant re-posts, but it’s nothing to write home about. It’s useful for saving me a bit of hassle and may become my main method for writing blog posts, but if I find another version of this application with even slightly better features, I’m jumping ship.

What it really needs is more layout functions. I’m able to do the standard stuff but inserting images with the software, as I have done above, doesn’t come out the same on the edit mode as it does in the preview, and may look different still when published. For example, if I moved an image around a block of text, it’d be interesting to see the text work around the image, like if I wanted a small image central in this paragraph and text all around it, rather than just the entire paragraph shifting around it, above or below.

My main reason for writing about this software is because of the impact it has on me and my writing. This is the first blog integration tool I’ve ever been persuaded to use and it has a lot of tools that will make my posts easier to deal with in the future. But the proof is in the pudding, so try it out for yourself and comment below.

In other words, I’m too lazy and have too much Uni work to do to properly finish this post off so I’m passing the buck. I plan to write a post in the next few days on Windows 7 when it’s released on Thursday. I’ve downloaded my free copy that I get for being a student from my university, but after the backlash that Microsoft got from early Vista adopters, I’m going to wait a bit and let MS work out the kinks and quickly throw out a few updates before I delve into the land of Windows 7 on my only fully functioning laptop, but I’ll still do an initial thoughts post and later a review.

Time to hit the books, unfortunately one of my text books is 800 pages so it hurts a bit to hit them…………bad joke I know.

Tedium

In the past I’ve managed to spend months on end doing absolutely fucking nothing, since my exams ended I’ve only had two whole days of doing nothing (one of which is today and it’s not even over yet) and I’m bored out of my tiny mind.

I spent Friday evening and yesterday at work, and I’m doing (i hope) an extra 12 hours per week on checkouts on top of the 12 I already do on fruit and veg. I also managed to, during my breaks, make a dent in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, which I am re-reading, I’d forgotten how much I liked it, so it seems that I can break up the days of tedious repetition at work and tedious boredom at home with literature, but after this I’ve got the complete Sherlock Holmes to read, which is a honking great book that I’m not going to be able to carry around to work and such so I need to find something else to read in a smaller form, or fork out $400 for an Amazon Kindle and the full works. None of which is easy or appealing given that I’m in the UK.

To add to the money I’m going to make from additional Sainsbury’s work, I also want to add Google Adsense to this blog to get some extra cash, I have no information regarding how successful this usually is but if my 6 months of the Web Management unit I did at college is anything to go by, I’m going to have to work up visitors before I can hope to make any real dosh. My website (mgfx.co.uk) already redirects straight here because I’m too lazy to design a new website but that never got inordinate visitors anyway. I’m gonna have to do some shameless cross-marketing to even have a chance at making this work.

Thought about going to see my sister today but didn’t really think seriously about it until last night by then it would’ve been too late to arrange anything so meh. She lives in Bristol which is about 4 hours from my current location so it’s not really a drop by for a coffee event.

Oh and at the end of the summer, when I do eventually go to university (if I get B’s then Reading, if not then Portsmouth) I’ve started getting worried that I may’ve chosen the wrong course to take (Applied Computer Science) having done Applied ICT at college instead of traditional Computing, so if by some coincidence somebody actually reads this, and if they happen to do Computer Science, can someone give me information, like what stuff do I need to know already, how is it as a course, etc.
