Tedium

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

In the past I’ve managed to spend months on end doing absolutely fucking nothing, since my exams ended I’ve only had two whole days of doing nothing (one of which is today and it’s not even over yet) and I’m bored out of my tiny mind.

I spent Friday evening and yesterday at work, and I’m doing (i hope) an extra 12 hours per week on checkouts on top of the 12 I already do on fruit and veg. I also managed to, during my breaks, make a dent in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, which I am re-reading, I’d forgotten how much I liked it, so it seems that I can break up the days of tedious repetition at work and tedious boredom at home with literature, but after this I’ve got the complete Sherlock Holmes to read, which is a honking great book that I’m not going to be able to carry around to work and such so I need to find something else to read in a smaller form, or fork out $400 for an Amazon Kindle and the full works. None of which is easy or appealing given that I’m in the UK.

To add to the money I’m going to make from additional Sainsbury’s work, I also want to add Google Adsense to this blog to get some extra cash, I have no information regarding how successful this usually is but if my 6 months of the Web Management unit I did at college is anything to go by, I’m going to have to work up visitors before I can hope to make any real dosh. My website (mgfx.co.uk) already redirects straight here because I’m too lazy to design a new website but that never got inordinate visitors anyway. I’m gonna have to do some shameless cross-marketing to even have a chance at making this work.

Thought about going to see my sister today but didn’t really think seriously about it until last night by then it would’ve been too late to arrange anything so meh. She lives in Bristol which is about 4 hours from my current location so it’s not really a drop by for a coffee event.

Oh and at the end of the summer, when I do eventually go to university (if I get B’s then Reading, if not then Portsmouth) I’ve started getting worried that I may’ve chosen the wrong course to take (Applied Computer Science) having done Applied ICT at college instead of traditional Computing, so if by some coincidence somebody actually reads this, and if they happen to do Computer Science, can someone give me information, like what stuff do I need to know already, how is it as a course, etc.

Star Trek/Wolverine

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Before I start, now that I am NOT a trekkie, I’m a Doctor Who and Star Wars geek but I apparentely draw the line at Star Trek.

Also, I saw Wolverine a few weeks ago and it was quite good, not amazing but still worth seeing.

Star Trek, however, was excellent. It was overall a good film, purists will absolutely hate it, something I think they tried to avoid by having the whole “alternative timeline” schtick. It’s clearly made for the general audience and not the major fanboys, and they’ve done a good job as it’’s a very fun film. It pokes fun at itself clearly and  has a good combination of action. Best acting in show has to go to Simon Pegg, though his part is relatively small he makes his presence so well known. Zacuary Quinto and the bloke that played Kirk are also pretty good. I don’t know much about the original series, were Spock and Ohoora (however you spell it) always together?

I’m really looking forward to the next Harry Potter film, I saw the trailer for it when I saw Star Trek earlier, and it looks really good. It’s odd how I can get so eager to see a film that I already know the ending to, but considering I’ve read the books I suppose what’s so fascinating is how it will be adapted and what will be ommited. I read somewhere that the reason they’re splitting Deathly Hallows into 2 films is so that they can tell the full story, but nobody’s fooled that it’s to make money. Thing is though the first half of Deathly Hallows are pretty boring, basically just Harry, Ron and Hermione sitting around a tent.

Also, saw a trailer for Toy Story 3, there is no-one too old to like the Toy Story movies! Next up, Windows 7 Review……………probably.

PEACE PEACE PEACE

I DECLARE PEACE!

I just had a heated debate with Louis (@ne0 on twitter) about the Mac/PC Debate that’s been raging since 1984, as I mentioned a few posts ago, I have no definitive preference between Macs and PCs, they both have good and bad points but I can’t afford Macs for the relative low end of the cheaper ones (Mac OR PC hater comments will be deleted, I’m here to discuss not argue).

However, the debate’s been going on so long with no final answer that the two of us aren’t going to solve it in one go. Given that I’ve reviewed the “new” iPhone on here I am also going to do a Windows7 review soon. I mean, 400 years later there are still raging debates over the meanings in ‘Hamlet’, tis a question we will never get an answer to because, quite frankly, there is no answer.

The title is a reference to the Robert Graves poem ‘A dead boche’, it may be in bad taste to compare the Mac/PC war to the atrocities of World War One but I like making literary references, so sue me. I did a war literature unit last year so I’m quite interesting in war literature.

I’m seeing the Star Trek Movie tomorrow, to which I shall be reviewing as soon as I can.

Thank you and goodnight!

T.S. Eliot and Doctor Who

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Hey guys, can anyone give me advice on the poems of T.S. Eliot, I’ve become more interested in poetry recently and was thinking about starting with him after studying Romantic poetry for English Lit. I want to read The Wastelands and the Hollow Men but is there any other poems that people can recommend?

Also, a friend of mine (a sort of insider) has told me that filming for new Doctor Who with Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith will start on 24th June, though he has no idea about storylines or the new Doctor’s costume.

iPhone 3G S – Hmm, um……….meh.

I think some company released a similar product this time a year ago, um.....er.....
I think some company released a similar product this time a year ago, um…..er…..

Before I start, know that I’m what could be known as iDon’tCare, in that whole Mac-PC debate, they both have their drawbacks and merits and I buy PCs (and Linux machines) just because of price. Now on with the show….

I’ve just read through all the details I can find on the new iPhone 3G S, and I have to say there was WAY too much hype and  not enough follow through. It’s a credit to Apple though that, even without Steve Jobs, they can still stir up such a fuss over the release of a fucking phone.

So, what’s new?

A digital compass………..wait, what? Yes, Apple feel that the most important thing that they needed in their Jesus Phone is a sodding compass. I imagine there’s some sort of way that this can be used in conjunction with the maps and GPS but it still seems unnecessary, I don’t really understand how it works unless there is a hardware doing it but I dont think there is. I don’t see the point of this but I’m sure somewhere somebody is krumping with joy.

The camera has been improved, but it’s still a meager 3-megapixels though it comes with some nice little details and features to make better images, but I get the feeling that these aren’t particularly amazing features and that Apple are just drumming up fuss over features that should’ve been in the first one. No front facing camera, but I don’t really think that’s necessary, besides when people have front facing cameras the pictures are always taken too low and they look all chin!

Video recording, again a feature that should’ve been on the very first iPhone but still. In-phone video editing is a nice little feature and direct upload to youtube isn’t bad. But I imagine that the interface is really fiddly and complicated, besides most serious YouTube uploaders properly edit their video before uploading it so why bother with this.

Voice command, nice one. If it works as well as the voice command on my netbook does then that should do well, but it’s probably  very limited, like my eee pc can only voice to websites that are pre-set by the program.

No Steve Jobs this time despite rumours, I knew he was stepping back this year but he seems to have vanished off the face of the Apple world, is he dead? Of course he’s not but somebody probably says he is somewhere.

Other WWDC stuff is hardly worth mentioning, just more overpriced and slightly price increased Macs making them even more out of my financial reach. iPhone pricing is still too high, even with their ‘budget model’ (ha!) to make it worth my while.

Overall, I think sales of this new iPhone will be poor, anyone who really wants an iPhone 3G will already have one and none of them will be fooled into thinking they’re really getting something radically different or now. Some have been angry that the stuff released should’ve been there from the beginning, and while that is so I find it hilarious to see the huge song and dance that some Apple fanboys have made, but I think even they were pushed this time.

Roll on iPhone 2010 rumours and fuss.

To be, or not to be. That wasn't the question.

My exams are officially over, as is my Collyers life. I had my final exam today, English Literature on Hamlet and Lyrical Ballads, the Hamlet question was about Ophelia, which was the subject of an essay we had to do a few months ago which I did quite well in, I managed to think of a lot of points and covered just about everything I wanted to, I ran short of time for that question so my conclusion was probably a bit weak but still I think that one went well. Lyrical Ballads was tricker, I did the question about the Romantic views on treating other people and came up with some good poems and examples, I’m not sure how I’ve done in that one but I think I’ve done alright. Jess, Lizzie and Jo, who I spoke to after the exam think pretty much the same as me, that it could’ve gone better but was definetely an alright exam.

Now that college is finished for me, I have to get as much overtime at work as I can (I work at Sainsburys) so that I can afford University given that my sister is doing her final year when I’m doing my first so bank of mum will be strained. On my base pay of 12 hours per week I do quite well but my car insurance (just under £1000) is due in September so maybe I’ll work up the funds to pay that off without it effecting what I would’ve got with no overtime.

Tomorrow is all about the sleep, I hope to make a dent in the pile of books I want to read over the summer, my first is re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which I read about a year ago and loved. I also want to read up on the iPhone 3G S so I can make my first tech impressions on this blog. On Friday I’m going to see Star Trek Movie with my dad (generally I’m not a trekkie but my dad is and I want to see it).

Moving to Doctor Who news, which you may’ve gleamed from the banner is one of the reasons for this blog. I read somewhere that Matt Smith (the eleventh doctor) is due to start filming later this month, I can’t wait to see what costume he’ll wear.

I bid you all a fond farewell for today!

Maintain Radio Silence

Monday, June 8th, 2009

I’ve set up this blog pre-emptively, but I still have exams to focus on, then again it’s just gone midnight on Tuesday morning and my last exam is on Wednesday afternoon, so this won’t be for long. I only set it up now because I had given up revision for the day and wanted to have something to look forward to without a load of setup required.

I’m either going to sleep now or continue revision, I’m  reading Lyrical Ballads, a collection of Romantic poems by Wordworth and Coleridge that I have an exam for (along with Shakespeare’s Hamlet) and came on to e-mail a question to my english teacher (at midnight, hmm…).

Coming soon, my impressions on the new iPhone 3G S, which I have only seen glimpses of so far but still, *popeye wink*!
